Conversational Hypnosis
Conversational Hypnosis differs from stage or conventional Hypnosis in taking what can be describes as a more relaxed approach to the subject. This should not be interpreted as less effective, far from it in fact. There is no doubt that Conversational Hypnosis is subtle yet powerful. It does not rely on a rigid structure of induction, trance state and closing sequence, as is more usual in Hypnosis sessions. Instead, the therapist, or practitioner, employs a variety of techniques to take the subject, or client, into the trance state needed to effect the desired changes.
How Does Hypnosis Work?
All Hypnosis works by accessing our unconscious minds and creating new neural pathways and thought patterns that we can employ to bring about the desired effect, whether this is quitting smoking, losing weight, increasing self-confidence, dealing with anxiety or a whole host of issues.
Your unconscious (some people prefer the term subconscious) mind absorbs information. It does this at a phenomenal rate, and it does it all the time. Your unconscious mind has no filter. It does not differentiate between “good” and “bad” information. This explains why we sometimes persist in damaging or unwanted behaviours. We even persist in these when we are determined, at a conscious level to change and to do things differently. Your unconscious receives an idea, a word or phrase and stores it away indefinitely. The role of your unconscious is to keep you “safe”. This implies it will send you messages to carry on doing what you know, because you are still here, right?
Hypnosis works by placing new ideas, information, commands, and thoughts into your unconscious mind when you are in a state of relaxation. These new messages are then available for you to call upon consciously when you want to change something.
How Does Conversational Hypnosis Differ from Traditional Hypnotherapy?
The beauty of conversational hypnosis is that it occurs naturally and organically. The traditional model of Hypnotherapy is known as paternalistic and imperative. The means that the therapist gives commands and directives to the subject during trance. Trance is achieved through a variety of methods, but almost always takes a little time. This is fine, as long as the subject is willing to keep their body still and follow the verbal commands.
Conversational Hypnosis follows a maternalistic style. This means that it employs suggestions, vague language, conditionals such as “may” and “might”. It is generally far more casual in it’s approach than the more imperative traditional model.
Rather than commanding a subject to perform an action or to visualize a certain object or scene, a conversational hypnotic therapist will simply suggest alternatives. The subject’s unconscious mind can sift through these to find the one that speaks to them at that time.
“Word Salads”, Never-Ending Sentences and Embedded Commands
Conversational therapists are very skilled and subtle in their work. They will use phrases like “and as you continue to feel relaxed you can notice…and as you feel…you might find that your hands are feeling relaxed and heavy…or they might be floating lightly…and as they continue to relax…” This, put very simply, is the never-ending sentence. Using these permissive techniques ensures that there are never any feelings of failure, either on the part of the subject or the therapist.
The commands are embedded in the natural speech patterns of the never-ending sentence. These allow the therapist to place new messages into the unconscious mind of the subject in a clever and subtle way. The subject then receives a whole host of new tools to work with when addressing their own issues. –
